What is the Full Form of WBC
Full Form of WBC
The full form of WBC is “White Blood Cell”. WBC is a type of blood cell that is made in the bone marrow and found in the blood and lymph tissue. White blood cells are part of the body’s immune system. It helps the body fight infection and other diseases. Types of white blood cells are granulocytes (neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils), monocytes, and lymphocytes (T cells and B cells). Counting the number of white blood cells in the blood is usually part of a complete blood cell (CBC) test. It may be used to look for conditions such as infection, inflammation, allergies, and leukemia. Also called leukocyte and WBC. Checkout this article to know more about the full form of WBC and its types.
The WBC is also labeled as Leukocytes. They work as a defense against all pathogens in the human body. WBC creates a different type of protein known as antibodies that recognize and counter the foreign agents like fungi, viruses, and bacteria that infect the parts of the human body. The WBC in the cells comprises recognizable granule-like structures in the body. Thus their name is Granulocytes and they do not contain granulocytes. WBCs account for 1 percent of the total quantity of blood and they are colorless, since these lack hemoglobin. The full form of WBC is detailed here.
Various types of WBC
We have covered the full form of WBC here. The WBC is classified into five distinct types, which are categorized depending on the existence and absence of granules. The 5 types of WBC are described below.
The least common of the granulocytes are basophils, ranging from 0.01 to 0.3 percent of WBC. They contain large cytoplasmic granules which play an important role in mounting a non-specific immune response to pathogens, and allergic reactions by releasing histamine and dilating the blood vessels of the human body. There is about 20 to 25 percent of basophils in WBCs. Such WBC can stain when they are exposed to simple dyes, thus called basophilic, and Basophils are best known for their function in asthma, and results in airway inflammation and bronchoconstriction. Lymphocytes play a significant role in the development of antibodies and body protection in human blood, the size of which varies from 8 to 10 micrometers and is generally referred to as the natural killer cells in the human body. A human body comprises on average 10 to 12 cells of lymphocytes. WBC are colorless cells that develop in lymphoid tissue, therefore called lymphocytes. These cells are quite significant in the immune system. There are two main lymphocyte types as below.
- B lymphocytes
- T lymphocytes
Monocyte cells typically have a large bilobed nucleus with a diameter of 12 to 20 micrometers and the nucleus is usually half-moon or kidney-shaped and occupies 3 to 8% of WBCs. Monocytes are Immune System garbage vehicles. After the full form of WBC, we are going to see the primary functions of Monocytes. The primary functions of monocytes are,
- Migrating into tissues and removing dead cells
- Shielding against bloodborne pathogens
- They travel very rapidly to tissue infection sites.
It is also one of the types of WBC. Neutrophils are generally found in the bloodstream, they are predominant cells, which are present in pus in the human body. About 60 to 70 percent of WBCs are neutrophils of 10 to 12 micrometers in diameter size. The nucleus is lobed with 2 to 5, and the cytoplasm has tiny granules. It assists with lysosomes in the degradation of bacteria and it serves as a potent oxidant. Neutrophils are only stained with neutral dyes. Neutrophils are often the first immune system cells to react to an invader, like a bacteria or a virus. The WBCs’ lifetime lasts up to 8 hours, and are generated in the bone marrow every day.
Eosinophils are the leukocyte cells that are present in the immune system and responsible for combating infections in vertebrate parasites and regulating processes associated with allergy & asthma. The full form of WBC is described above. Eosinophilic cells are small granulocytes that are formed in the bone marrow that make up 2 to 4% of all WBCs and are present in the digestive tract at high concentrations level.
Why WBC is called white?
Etymology. The name “white blood cell” derives from the physical appearance of a blood sample after centrifugation. White cells are found in the buffy coat, a thin, typically white layer of nucleated cells.
