The full form of AAI is “Airport Authority of India”. AAI stands for Airport Authority of India. It works under the Ministry of Civil Aviation in the ministry of the government of India. It is responsible for creating, maintaining, and upgrading the civil aviation infrastructure in India. It performs plenty of duties which include managing 125 Airports, air navigation services, managing the Air traffic over Indian airspace and bordering oceanic areas, etc.
History of AAI
Airports Authority of India (AAI) was constituted by an Act of Parliament and came into existence on 1st April 1995 by merging the erstwhile National Airports Authority and International Airports Authority of India. The merger brought into existence a single Organization entrusted with the responsibility of creating, upgrading, maintaining, and managing civil aviation infrastructure both on the ground and in air space in India.
AAI manages a total of 137 airports which include 24 International airports (3 Civil Enclaves), 10 Customs Airports (4 Civil Enclaves), and 103 Domestic airports (23 Civil Enclaves) in India. AAI provides air navigation services over 2.8 million square nautical miles of air space. During the year 2019-20, AAI handled aircraft movement of 1314.23.

The organizational structure of AAI
AAI board consists of a Chairman and five whole-time members who are appointed by the central government of India. The Director General of Civil Aviation is an ex-officio member of the AAI board. Apart from this, the AAI board also has part-time members. It is divided into five administrative regions, each headed by a Regional Executive Director (RED). AAI having its corporate headquarters at Rajiv Gandhi Bhawan, New Delhi is operating from its five regional headquarters namely:-
