Mark Manson was raised in Austin, Texas, in the United States. He moved to Boston, Massachusetts to study, and graduated from Boston University in 2007. After that in 2016, he got married to Fernanda Neute.
Mark Manson started his first blog about dating advice in 2008. In 2010, he started a new blog called post masculine (now defunct) which was based on general life advice for men. Manson moved his blog to markmanson.net in 2013. In 2015, Manson published a blog article “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k”, which would form the basis of his second book by the same name.
Manson’s first book, Models: Attract Women through Honesty, was self-published in 2011. It was reissued by Pan Macmillan Australia in 2017.
His second book, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life, was published in 2016. It appeared on the New York Times Bestseller List at number 6 in the category of How-to and Miscellaneous in 2016 and rose to number one on the list the week of July 16, 2017. As of May 2020, the book has spent 179 weeks in the top 10 and has sold over 12 million copies across the globe.

In October 2018, Penguin Random House announced that Manson would work with Will Smith to write the actor’s autobiography. It was published in November 2021. In December 2020, Manson released a book in the form of an audiobook called Love Is Not Enough exclusively through Audible.
The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life is a 2016 nonfiction self-help genre book by American blogger and author Mark Manson. The book covers Manson’s belief that life’s struggles give it fruitful meaning and argues that typical self-help books offer meaningless positivity which is neither practical nor helpful, thus improperly approaching the problems many individuals face. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k was a New York Times and Globe and Mail bestseller.
The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k was published under the imprint of HarperOne, a division of HarperCollins Publishers, and was released on September 13, 2016. As of May 2019, over 8 million copies of the book had been sold worldwide.
The book is a reaction to the self-help genre industry and what Manson saw as a culture of mindless positivity that is not practical or helpful for most people. Manson uses many of his personal experiences to illustrate how life’s struggles often give it more meaning, which, he argues, is a better approach than constantly trying to be happy. Manson’s approach and writing style have been categorized by some as contrarian to the general self-help industry, using blunt honesty and profanity to illustrate his ideas.
The book has a total of 9 chapters. The first chapter, Don’t Try, is named after the philosophy of Charles Bukowski, who served as a major inspiration for the whole book.
The chapters have the following titles:
1. Don’t Try.
2. Happiness is a problem.
3. You are not special.
4. The value of suffering.
5. You are always choosing.
6. You are wrong about everything.
7. Failure is the way forward.
8. The importance of saying no.
9. And then you die.
The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k argues that every person should seek to find meaning through what they find to be important and only involves values that an individual can control. Values (such as popularity) that are not under a person’s control, are, according to the book marked as ‘bad values. Furthermore, individuals should strive to replace these uncontrollable values with things they can modify, such as punctuality, honesty, or kindness. Manson further cautions against claiming certainty about knowledge/ability that is out of one’s grasp, especially in the case of attempting to leave a legacy. Meaning can be found, Manson claims, when one seeks to create joy at the moment for one’s self and those around as opposed to being concerned with building a body of work as a legacy. This book generally emphasizes the feeling and emotions which can be controlled by any individual.
The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k first appeared on the New York Times Bestseller List at number 6 in the category of How-to and Miscellaneous for the week of October 2, 2016.
The book also appeared on the Washington Post Bestseller List at number 9 in the Non-fiction/General category for the week of September 25, 2016.
Manson makes the statement, backed both by educational research and well-timed poop jokes that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade, but on discovering to stomach lemons better. Human beings are flawed and limitedβ”not everybody can be extraordinary, there are winners and losers in society and some of it is not fair or your fault.” Manson advises us to get to know our limitations and accept them.
